Dozens of firearms are still yet to be handed over to authorities, just days before they are officially outlawed in Western Australia.
Earlier this year, the state government revealed a major crackdown on what it said were “dangerous” and high-powered guns as well as ammunition designed to shoot over long ranges and pierce armour plating.
The bans were a request from WA Police and prompted in part by the assassination of Perth bikie figure Nick Martin by sniper rifle in December, 2020.

In all, 56 types of firearms and 19 calibres of ammunition will be banned from July 1.
The WA Government promised a “market value” refund to gun owners who surrender their weapons before the deadline.
The $1.5 million buyback scheme does not include compensation for bullets.
The deadline lapses at midnight Friday evening, with 90 per cent of 281 registered weapons handed over, destroyed, sold interstate or overseas, or rechambered.
It means authorities are still waiting for the surrender of 28 registered firearms.
Police Minister Paul Papalia was sought for comment on the looming deadline.
The huge ban was announced earlier this year amid news of a major overhaul of WA’s 50-year-old firearm legislation, with the aim of creating some of the toughest laws in the country.
One component of the updated act will be mandatory mental health checks for gun owners.
In 2022, 20 people were shot dead in WA.
“The firearms Police have asked us to ban are anti-materiel or designed for hunting large animals that we don’t have in Australia,” Papalia said previously.
“The Western Australian Police Force recently seized an arsenal of high-powered firearms being incorrectly stored in a secret underground bunker, hidden beneath a storage unit in suburban Perth.
“Unbelievably, the worst offence this individual has allegedly committed is failing to apply to the local council for approval to build the bunker and underground shooting range.
“That’s how outdated and weak our 50-year-old firearms laws are here in WA, and that’s why the Western Australian Police Force have asked us to completely overhaul them.”
There has been pushback to the bans, with the WA branch of the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia arguing the state government was “blatantly disrespecting law-abiding licensed firearm owners“.
“The owners of these firearms have invested significant amount of time and money into their sport, recreational pastime and tools of trade for pest control with the understanding that if they act lawfully, they can carry out their activities, not dissimilar to people altering cars or sporting equipment fit for purpose,” SSAA WA president Paul Fitzgerald said.
